Car insurance complaints in Texas: TDI, appraisal and OPIC

5 receipts · verified

The Texas sources on car insurance complaints cover several topics.

TDI says many issues can be resolved by talking to the insurance company or agent.1 The Texas Insurance Code says a notice rejecting a claim must state the reasons for the rejection.2

TDI also describes its own complaint process. TDI says to use its online complaint system to describe the complaint and upload documents such as pictures or letters to and from the company.1 TDI’s auto guide says a complaint to TDI must be in writing.3 TDI’s page “Get help with an auto insurance complaint” says companies have 15 days1 to respond to TDI. TDI’s page “Getting help with an insurance complaint” says auto and home insurance companies have 25 days4 to respond.

TDI says it cannot make a company pay a claim unless not paying violates a law or the terms of the policy.1

TDI also describes appraisal. TDI says appraisal lets the policyholder and the company each hire an appraiser, and the two appraisers then choose a third appraiser as an umpire.1

OPIC says it is not the state insurance regulator, so a complaint about an insurance company cannot be filed with it.5
