This page explains how the facts on this site are gathered and checked.
Where facts come from
Facts come only from Texas government sources. These are state statutes, the Department of Public Safety, the Department of Insurance, the Department of Motor Vehicles and state courts. For the rules of the Texas automobile insurance plan, we also use the plan’s own published rules. We do not use blogs, insurer marketing pages or other publishers.
How each fact is stored
Every fact in our dataset keeps the same record. It holds the value, the agency, the page address, the date we last retrieved it, and a word-for-word quote from the source. The quote is copied exactly. It is never paraphrased.
How facts are checked
An automated check fetches every source page again. It confirms that the stored quote is still on the page. If the page has moved or the wording has changed, the check fails and the fact is reviewed before it is used again.
Facts that rest on older agency pages are held back. A held back fact is not shown on any page until a person has confirmed it against the current source.
How numbers reach the page
No number on a page is typed by hand. Each number is inserted from the dataset at build time, and the page shows a numbered citation beside it. If a page refers to a fact that is missing or held back, the site does not build. This stops a wrong figure from reaching readers.
Open data
The dataset is published openly, so anyone can read the same facts, quotes and sources that the pages use. See the data page for the file and its license.
What this site does not cover
- Prices, premiums or rates.
- Comparisons of insurers or policies.
- Advice about any individual situation.
Rules change. Each page shows the date it was last updated, and the source it cites controls if anything differs. To report an error, see the corrections page.
