How long does Texas require an SR-22?

The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) states that a person in Texas must keep an SR-22 on file for 2 years1 from the date of the conviction that requires it, or from the date a crash judgment was rendered. DPS says that if a new conviction requiring an SR-22 is reported to the department, the length of the requirement may be extended.2 DPS also says the driving privilege and vehicle registration may be suspended if it is notified the SR-22 was cancelled, terminated or lapsed and no new SR-22 was filed before the cancellation.1 According to DPS, if the coverage lapses, the driver license would be re-suspended, and these would be required to reinstate it: new SR-22 and $100 fee2. DPS words the period this way:

You are required to maintain coverage for two years beginning from the date of the conviction that requires a SR-22, or in the case of a judgment against you due to a crash, two years from the date the judgment was rendered.

DWI conviction 2 years3 from the date of conviction, if an SR-22 is required (DPS)

Second no-insurance conviction DPS suspends the license unless the person files and maintains proof of financial responsibility until the second anniversary of the later conviction (Transportation Code).5
